Start Your Small Town Series with Nisswa, Minnesota
There’s something undeniably special about small towns in the Midwest. The kind of charm that can’t be manufactured—friendly faces, local shops, historic buildings, and hidden gems you won’t find anywhere else. If you’ve ever craved a relaxing escape that doesn’t involve airports or traffic jams, these day-trip destinations are just what you need.
This post kicks off a new series I’m so excited about: exploring the Midwest one small town at a time. From lakeside communities and flower farms to cozy cafes and roadside surprises, these towns are packed with personality—and they’re all within easy driving distance.
Let’s start with one of my favorite recent visits: Nisswa, Minnesota.
🧡 Nisswa, MN - Where lakeside leisure meets small-town charm

Nestled in the heart of Minnesota’s lake country, Nisswa is the kind of place where you can slow down, sip something cold, and savor a day filled with simple joys.
Here’s how to spend the perfect day in Nisswa:
🥤 Start with a Refreshing Juice - Kick things off at The Just Juice Co., a cute little spot with vibrant, fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, and wellness shots. It’s a great pick-me-up to fuel your day of exploring.

☕ Or Cozy Up with Coffee - If you’re craving caffeine and a baked treat, head to Knotty Pine Bakery. Their cozy vibe and classic pastries make it a favorite among locals—and the perfect spot to sit for a bit before hitting the shops.
🛍️ Stroll the Downtown Shops
Nisswa’s main street is lined with boutiques, antique stores, gift shops, and local treasures. From handcrafted goods to lake-themed apparel, there’s something for everyone (and yes, you’ll probably leave with at least one “up north” souvenir).

🍦 Treat Yourself at The Chocolate Ox
This old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop is a must-visit. Whether you go for a scoop of ice cream, a nostalgic candy favorite, or some handmade fudge, The Chocolate Ox delivers all the small-town sweetness you’re looking for.

🚲 Rent a Bike & Explore the Paul Bunyan Trail
If you want to add some movement to your day, rent bikes and hit the Paul Bunyan Trail, which runs right through Nisswa. It’s flat, scenic, and perfect for a relaxing ride.

🐴 Visit The Livery
A newer addition to the area, The Livery offers a western-style experience and often hosts fun local events, live music, and gatherings. It’s a great mid-afternoon stop if you’re looking for something unique to do.

🍕 Dinner at Rafferty’s Pizza
For dinner, you can’t go wrong with Rafferty’s Pizza—a longtime favorite with creative topping combos and that classic small-town pizzeria vibe. It’s casual, quick, and always satisfying after a full day.

🍷 End Your Day with Drinks at WineDown
As the sun sets, settle in on the patio at WineDown. This cozy wine bar offers a great selection of wines, friendly staff, and a peaceful way to toast the day. Don’t skip the charcuterie board—it’s amazing!

📍 Other Towns Coming Soon in the Series:
I’ve made it a mission to visit and highlight more small towns across the Midwest, and here are just a few that are up next:
Stillwater, MN – Riverfront charm, historic homes, rooftop cocktails, and boutique shopping.
Grand Marais, MN – Harbor town vibes, scenic hikes, and the iconic World’s Best Donuts.
Bayfield, WI – The gateway to the Apostle Islands, with lake views, art galleries, and berry farms.
Petoskey, MI – Lake Michigan views, Petoskey stone hunting, and quaint downtown strolls.
Lanesboro, MN – Root River bike trails, charming B&Bs, and a peaceful bluffside setting.
Cedarburg, WI – Cobblestone streets, historic mills turned into shops, and cozy cafés.
New Glarus, WI – Swiss heritage, chalet-style architecture, and of course, New Glarus Brewing.
Red Wing, MN – River bluffs, pottery shops, art walks, and the iconic Red Wing Shoe store.
Harbor Springs, MI – Coastal charm, marina views, and great shopping near Petoskey.
Each of these towns offers a unique flavor of the Midwest, and I can’t wait to share more travel guides, foodie finds, and hidden gems from each one.
