As summer begins winding down, August brings a wave of fun festivals, fairs, and activities across the Upper Midwest. From country music and state fairs to pet‑friendly street parties and scenic heritage events, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan offer something for every traveler and age group.


Here’s a curated list of five standout events—a mix of family‑friendly, pet‑friendly, and adult‑focused experiences—to make August count in 2025.


1. Minnesota State Fair – St. Paul, MN(Aug 21–Sept)

One of America’s largest state fairs, the Minnesota State Fair is a must‑visit. With over 1,600 food items, nightly fireworks, livestock exhibits, art, music, and carnival rides, it offers something for all ages—including kids’ rides, beer gardens, and adult concerts. It’s particularly welcoming with family areas and is pet-friendly only service animals, so plan accordingly.

2. WE Fest – Detroit Lakes, MN (Aug 1–3)

Held over the first weekend in August, WE Fest is one of the nation’s largest country music and camping festivals. Expect big-name country acts, on‑site camping, and a vibrant, music‑loving crowd. While it’s more suited to adult audiences, it does welcome older teens with accompanying adults. Pets are generally not permitted on the festival grounds.

3. Pine County Fair – Pine City, MN (First Weekend of August)

This traditional county fair offers something for everyone: carnival rides, 4-H livestock contests, demolition derbies, craft exhibits, food vendors, and family‑oriented community events. Many activities are family-friendly, and small pets on leashes may be allowed—check fair rules in advance.

4. Milwaukee Irish Fest – Milwaukee, WI (Aug 14–17)

A lively celebration of Irish culture offering music (nearly 250 acts on 17 stages), céilí dancing lessons, Gaelic sports, poetry, food, and cultural exhibitions. It’s welcoming to all ages—with family zones, traditional fare, and beer gardens for adults. Pets are typically not allowed on festival grounds.

5. Wisconsin State Fair – West Allis, WI (Mid‑August)

Running for about 11 days in mid‑August, the Wisconsin State Fair combines carnival rides, livestock shows, musical performances, craft vendors, and iconic food offerings. It’s family‑friendly and features a dedicated Kids’ zone alongside a Wine & Beer Garden for adults. Only service animals are allowed.

6. Onekama Days – Onekama, MI (Jul 31–Aug 4)

A warm, small‑town festival with free admission that features a pet blessing, children’s circus performances, rock painting, scavenger hunts, a pig roast, car show, fireworks off a pontoon boat, beach yoga, and live music. Entirely family- and pet‑friendly—a charming mix of fun and community spirit.

7. River Days Festival – Midland / Great Lakes Bay Region, MI (Jul 31–Aug 3)

Spanning late July into early August, River Days offers canoe races, hot air balloons, live outdoor concerts, nature hikes, educational nature center programs, and community picnics. It’s perfect for families and pet‑friendly outdoor adventures, with open‑air spaces and riverfront views.
