How to Drive the Red Rock Loop: Route Overview


The Red Rock Scenic Byway (Highway 179) is the main road leading into Sedona from the south, running from Interstate 17 to Uptown Sedona. The Red Rock Loop Road is a smaller offshoot, offering a quieter, more immersive drive into the red rock countryside.

1. Start on Highway 179 (Red Rock Scenic Byway) – If you’re coming from Phoenix or Flagstaff, this is the gateway to Sedona.

3. End back on Highway 89A or return via Highway 179 – You can continue exploring or loop back to Sedona’s main areas.

1. Bell Rock & Courthouse Butte (Highway 179)

• One of Sedona’s most famous landmarks, Bell Rock is a stunning sandstone formation that’s easy to spot from the highway.

• Stop at the Bell Rock Trailhead if you want to stretch your legs and take a short walk for an even better view.

• Courthouse Butte, another impressive rock formation, stands right next to Bell Rock, making this stop even more scenic.


2. Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Crossing

• One of the most iconic views in Sedona is from Red Rock Crossing, where Cathedral Rock reflects beautifully in the waters of Oak Creek.
