If you’re heading in Duluth, spending a day in Canal Park is an absolute must.
Located right along Lake Superior, Canal Park is one of the most iconic areas in Duluth. With historic ships, waterfront views, local shops, and classic restaurants, it’s the perfect mix of sightseeing, relaxing, and indulging in great food.

Here’s exactly how we spent our day — plus more things you won’t want to miss.
Start with the Iconic Aerial Lift Bridge
No trip to Canal Park is complete without seeing the famous Aerial Lift Bridge.
This historic bridge connects Canal Park to Park Point and lifts to allow massive freighters to pass through the Duluth Ship Canal. Watching it rise as ships come in from Lake Superior is such a cool experience — and even if you don’t catch it lifting, it’s one of the most photographed landmarks in Minnesota.
Even though it was winter, we spent time walking near the water, taking photos, and just soaking in those lake views. It’s such a peaceful yet energizing spot.

Walk the Canal Park Boardwalk
One of the best (and free!) things to do is simply walking the Lakewalk and boardwalk along the water.
The views of Lake Superior, passing boats, and the Duluth skyline are beautiful year-round. There are benches to relax, photo spots everywhere, and easy access to shops and restaurants.

If you’re visiting in warmer months, this is the perfect way to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.
Afternoon Drinks at Vikre Distillery
After exploring, we grabbed a drink at Vikre Distillery.
This cozy craft distillery offers beautifully made cocktails featuring their locally distilled spirits. The vibe is modern but relaxed — the perfect place to sit down, rest your feet, and enjoy a handcrafted drink.

If you love supporting local businesses when you travel, this is definitely worth stopping at.

Dinner at Grandma’s Restaurant
For dinner, we headed to the iconic Grandma’s Restaurant — a Canal Park classic.
It’s one of those places that feels like a tradition when you visit Duluth. The atmosphere is casual and fun, and the menu is full of comfort food favorites. Whether you’re craving pasta, seafood, burgers, or something hearty after a day of walking, Grandma’s delivers.

It’s the perfect way to end a full day exploring Canal Park.
Sweet Treat from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
Of course, no perfect day is complete without dessert.
We stopped at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and grabbed one of their famous caramel apples — and it was SO good.
Sweet, crisp, and covered in delicious toppings, it was the perfect treat to enjoy while walking along the lake. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for something indulgent.

Other Things to Do in Canal Park Duluth

Stop by Love Creamery for small-batch, handcrafted ice cream with creative flavors. Perfect for summer visits.

🛍 DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace
Explore the shops inside DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace, a historic lakeside building filled with local boutiques, gifts, and specialty stores.

🚢 Vista Fleet Cruise
Take a scenic cruise with Vista Fleet for a relaxing tour of the Duluth harbor and Lake Superior. It’s a great way to see the city from the water.

⚓ Tour the William A. Irving
If you didn’t earlier in the day — make time for it! The William A. Irving is one of Canal Park’s most unique attractions.
