If you’re looking for the perfect Minnesota road trip, this 3-day itinerary takes you through some of the best spots in the state—from charming small towns to lake life and the iconic North Shore.


This route is ideal if you want a mix of relaxing lake days, cute downtowns, great food, and scenic views—without feeling rushed.

Route:

St. Cloud → Alexandria → Brainerd / Nisswa → Duluth


Total Time: 3 days

Best For: couples, girls trips, or a laid-back weekend getaway



☀️ Day 1: St. Cloud → Alexandria (Small Town Charm + Lake Life)


Start your trip in St. Cloud, a convenient central starting point.


☕ Morning: Coffee + Quick Exploring

Before hitting the road:

  • Grab coffee at a local café

  • Take a quick walk along the Mississippi River

  • Fuel up for the day


Then hop in the car—it’s about a 1-hour drive to your next stop.


🌼 Afternoon: Explore Alexandria

Welcome to Alexandria, one of the cutest small towns in Minnesota (and seriously underrated).


Things to Do:

  • Walk through downtown shops

  • Visit Lake Carlos State Park for a quick nature break

  • Grab coffee or ice cream

  • Local cafés or a casual lunch spot downtown

  • Don’t skip a bakery stop (trust me on this one 👀)

🌅 Evening: Wind Down by the Lake

This is where the trip starts to feel like a getaway.

🌲 Day 2: Alexandria → Brainerd/Nisswa → Duluth


Day 2 is all about lake life + scenic driving.


🚗 Morning: Drive to Brainerd Lakes Area

Head about 1–1.5 hours to Brainerd.


Stop in Nisswa:

Make a quick detour to Nisswa, a must-visit small town.


What to Do:

🚙 Afternoon: Drive to Duluth

From Brainerd/Nisswa, head to Duluth (about 2–2.5 hours).


The scenery starts to shift here, and you’ll feel that North Shore energy kick in.

This stretch along Lake Superior is one of the most scenic drives in the Midwest.
