Driving the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) is one of the most scenic road trips in the world. Stretching 144 miles (230 km) between Banff and Jasper, this route winds through towering peaks, turquoise lakes, ancient glaciers, and breathtaking waterfalls.
On our journey, we took the full day to stop at some of the most stunning spots along the way—and honestly, it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Here’s a look at our adventure from Banff to Jasper and the incredible stops we made along the Icefields Parkway.

🚗 Our Stops Along the Icefields Parkway
Bow Lake
Just off the highway, Bow Lake is a quiet and serene stop surrounded by mountain peaks. The water is a striking shade of turquoise, fed by the Bow Glacier, and it’s one of the largest lakes in Banff National Park. We walked along the shoreline to take in the views and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere—it felt like the perfect start to our drive.

Peyto Lake Overlook
One of the most iconic viewpoints on the entire drive, Peyto Lake is shaped like a wolf (or fox) head when viewed from above. The overlook sits high above the valley and offers jaw-dropping views of the lake’s glacial-fed waters, shimmering in a vivid blue. Even with the crowds, it’s a must-stop.

Waterfowl Lakes
This hidden gem felt much quieter compared to the more famous lakes. Waterfowl Lakes are two connected lakes surrounded by lush forest and mountains. The stillness of the water perfectly reflected the peaks, making it one of the most peaceful stops on the parkway.
Mistaya Canyon
A short trail leads to Mistaya Canyon, where the Mistaya River has carved deep grooves into the rock. The swirling water rushing through the narrow canyon was incredible to watch, and the curved rock formations made it feel almost otherworldly.

Columbia Icefield – Athabasca Glacier
One of the highlights of the drive, the Columbia Icefield is massive, and you can see the Athabasca Glacier right from the road. We stopped to admire the glacier up close—it’s humbling to realize how old and powerful this ice formation is. You can also join guided tours here, but even a roadside stop gives you a sense of its scale.

Tangle Creek & Falls
Right along the highway, Tangle Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall that cascades gracefully down the rocks. It’s easy to pull over and admire, and the sound of the rushing water makes it a refreshing stop.

Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint
This overlook gives you a panoramic view of the Stutfield Glacier tucked between jagged peaks. It’s a quick stop but worth it for the sweeping views—it feels like standing in front of a painting.

Sunwapta Falls & Chutes
Swapta Falls was another unforgettable stop. The falls split around a small island, creating a dramatic rush of water that crashes through the gorge. We also followed the path to the lower falls (Chutes Falls), which were equally impressive and less crowded.

Goats & Glaciers Lookout
This scenic pull-off is exactly what it sounds like—a chance to spot mountain goats against a backdrop of glaciers. While we didn’t see goats this time, the sweeping views of the valley and icefields made it worthwhile.

Athabasca Falls
Our final stop before reaching Jasper was Athabasca Falls, and it was the perfect way to end the drive. The sheer power of the water roaring through the canyon is incredible, and the multiple viewpoints let you see it from every angle. It’s one of the most famous waterfalls in Jasper National Park for good reason.

The Icefields Parkway is more than just a drive—it’s an experience. Every turn reveals another jaw-dropping view, and every stop feels like a destination in itself. From turquoise lakes to powerful waterfalls and massive glaciers, this road trip will forever stand out as one of the most beautiful drives we’ve ever done.

If you’re planning to drive from Banff to Jasper, give yourself plenty of time—at least a full day—to make the most of the stops along the way. Trust me, you won’t want to rush it!
