If you’re looking for a charming Midwest day trip filled with cute shops, lakeside views, and great food—Alexandria is such a hidden gem.
We spent the day exploring and honestly… it’s one of those towns you could visit again and again. Here’s exactly what we did (and highly recommend 👇).

☀️ Morning: Coffee + Sweet Start
We kicked off the day with a cozy, slow morning—starting with a MUST-stop at Roers Bakery.
This place is an old-fashioned bakery in the best way:
Insanely cheap
Homemade baked goods
Local, nostalgic feel
👉 You have to get the cake donuts—they’re that good.

After that, we headed over to Common Grounds Coffee House for coffee and a relaxed start to the day.

🛍️ Late Morning: Downtown Exploring
Next, we headed to Broadway Street in downtown Alexandria—and this is where you’ll want to take your time.

Cute boutiques
Home decor shops
Local finds you won’t see anywhere else

We spent about 2 hours just wandering in and out of shops.
Our favorites:
Creative Touch Boutique – SO good for unique finds!

Scandivian – We had to stop here since Matt’s Norwegian. 🇳🇴

🛶 Midday: Iconic Stops + Lunch
No trip to Alexandria is complete without seeing Big Ole.👇
📍 Visit the Big Ole Viking Statue and walk through the Runestone Museum.
It’s the photo spot in town
Quick stop, but fun and full of personality

Then we grabbed lunch at Pike & Pint Grill—and WOW.

What we ordered:
Reuben
Korean BBQ Beef Tacos

Both were so good. Definitely recommend stopping here.
🌊 Afternoon: Lake Time
After lunch, we headed to Lake Carlos State Park.

This spot is stunning (even more beautiful in the summer):
Peaceful nature vibes
Perfect for a short walk or just relaxing by the lake

It’s one of those places that makes you slow down and just enjoy being outside.

🌅 Golden Hour: Sunset Views (it was cloudy when we went so we didn’t get a sunset)
For sunset, you have a couple great options:
Lake Carlos
Lake Darling (public access spots)
Golden hour here is chef’s kiss—perfect for photos, reels, or just soaking it all in.
🍷 Evening: Wine + Chill Vibes
We ended the day at Carlos Creek Winery and 22 Northmen Brewing Company.

This place is such a vibe:
Outdoor seating
Live music on weekends
Wine flights + wine slushies (yes please 🙌)

Honestly one of the best winery experiences in Minnesota.

Final Thoughts
Alexandria is the perfect mix of:
Small-town charm
Lake life
Great food + drinks
Easy, relaxed exploring
Whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, this itinerary is such a good place to start.
