Looking for a fun Minnesota day trip that combines delicious food, beautiful scenery, charming downtown streets, and hidden outdoor gems? Wadena, Minnesota, is the perfect destination.

Located in central Minnesota, Wadena is one of those small towns that pleasantly surprises you. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend adventure or simply want to explore somewhere new, you’ll find plenty to do in this welcoming community.

Here’s exactly how we spent the perfect day in Wadena.

Start Your Morning at Oma’s Restaurant & Bakery

Our first stop was Oma’s Restaurant & Bakery, and it set the tone for an amazing day.

This local favorite is known for its authentic German recipes, homemade baked goods, and cozy atmosphere. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with the smell of fresh pastries and friendly service.

If you only order one thing, make it the caramel roll—but honestly, you should probably order two pastries because the almond croissant was just as incredible. Both were soft, buttery, and absolutely delicious alongside a fresh cup of coffee.

It’s the perfect place to fuel up before spending the day exploring Wadena.

Wander Through Green Island Preserve & Retreat

After breakfast, we headed to one of Wadena’s hidden gems—Green Island Preserve & Retreat.

This beautiful 60-acre urban forest offers peaceful walking trails winding through mature trees, colorful gardens, sculptures, and quiet places to sit and enjoy nature. It’s hard to believe you’re still in town because it feels so peaceful and secluded.

Whether you’re looking for an easy nature walk, hoping to spot wildlife, or simply wanting a quiet place to relax, Green Island is well worth adding to your itinerary.

Bring your camera because there are beautiful photo opportunities throughout the preserve.

Explore Downtown Wadena

Next, we spent time strolling through downtown Wadena.

One of our favorite things about traveling around Minnesota is discovering unique downtown districts, and Wadena definitely has that classic small-town charm.

Take your time walking the streets, browsing locally owned shops, admiring the colorful murals and public art, and exploring the historic railroad depot area. There are plenty of spots to stop for photos while soaking in the slower pace of small-town life.

Downtown Wadena is clean, welcoming, and full of character.

Enjoy Lunch at The Uptown

By lunchtime we were ready to eat, and The Uptown did not disappoint.

We ordered the famous Dilly Burger along with the loaded nachos, and both were phenomenal.

The burger was flavorful, juicy, and cooked perfectly, while the nachos were piled high with toppings and big enough to share.

If you’re looking for classic comfort food while visiting Wadena, this is definitely a stop you’ll want to make.

Spend the Afternoon at Black’s Grove Park

After lunch, we headed over to Black’s Grove Park to enjoy some time outdoors.

This park is another hidden gem in the area, offering wooded hiking and biking trails that are peaceful and well-maintained.

It’s a wonderful place to stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh air, and experience another side of Wadena beyond the downtown area.

Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply enjoy an easy walk through nature, you’ll appreciate the beauty and tranquility of this park.

Relax at a Local Brewery

Before heading home, we stopped at one of Wadena’s local breweries to relax and unwind.

There’s just something about ending a day trip with a locally crafted drink while reflecting on all the places you’ve explored.

It’s the perfect way to slow down before making the drive home.

Watch the Planes Take Off

One unexpected highlight of our visit was stopping near the local airport to watch the small planes take off and land.

It wasn’t something we had planned, but it turned into one of those simple moments that made the day even more memorable.

Sometimes the best travel memories are the ones you don’t expect.

Is Wadena Worth Visiting? Absolutely.

Wadena may not be one of Minnesota’s most talked-about destinations, but that’s part of what makes it so special.

Between the incredible bakery, peaceful nature preserve, charming downtown, delicious local restaurants, scenic parks, friendly people, and relaxing atmosphere, Wadena offers everything you need for a memorable day trip.

If you’re searching for hidden gems in Minnesota, this small town deserves a spot on your bucket list.
